Getting to Lyon City Centre from Lyon St Exupery Airport – Sojoourn

Updated: Apr 11, 2019

When you arrive in Lyon St Exepury, there are several options to get to the city center or its surroundings. On average it takes between 1.5 - 2 hours from disembarking the airplane to downtown Lyon.

Rhone Express

The RhôneExpress will take you directly to Part Dieu train station. It is the direct Shuttle service from the airport to the city center.

The ticket will cost 15€ per person and is available at the airport lobby, from the controllers (but it will cost you more), or online. The RhôneExpress tram runs everyday, all year from 5am to midnight between the airport and the center of Lyon in less than 30min. Leaves every 30 minutes between 4:25 and 6:00am and between 9:00pm and midnight, and every 15 minutes between 6:00 am and 9:00pm. Here are the links for the full timetables.

Try to get your ticket before you board, either at the machines or online. If you wait till you board the Rhonexpress and buy it onboard, they will charge you an additional €4 for each transaction. www.rhonexpress.fr

Taxi

By taxi or Uber if are more than 3 people. The journey from the airport to Lyon city centre costs around 56€ (day) and 83€ (night). Be careful with the traffic, which can be a serious problem when going to the airport.

Carpooling (BlablaCar)

BlaBlaCar is a mobile app-based carpooling. As Lyon airport is a popular destination, there are dozens of journeys offered every day, costing €3-6. This is a great way to meet locals/other travellers, if only for a short time.

Lyko, a new app developed by Lyon residents. Connect with passengers on your flight, or flights within the same time slot and share the travel expenses to and from the airport.

Car rental

The final option for getting into Lyon from the airport is rent a car. This is a great option if you plan on exploring beyond the city and want control over your transportation. You can pick one up at the airport in the arrivals area from companies such as Europcar, Avis and Sixt.

To recap, the cheapest way into the city is to do carpooling.

The quickest and most direct is to take the Rhone Express but if you are more than 3 people, we recommend you to take a Taxi or Uber. If you plan on heading beyond Lyon and see the vineyards around, your best option would be to rent a car from the airport.

Bon séjour à Lyon!
